<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEim4M0Bqwsti_jyMlh0X3Vi2PQhmG9bryY-d_unXt_J5ql1PoFa8p0nGcDhRCoOOb6oAvKfTunKf1JwW-W_K6NA0U9q92KziuyeGXIQJl81B7F7pLi6uIaXAD0KtAalsOjHerwe0w958N8/s1600/Short+Film+Project+Overview.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1132" data-original-width="1600" height="141" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEim4M0Bqwsti_jyMlh0X3Vi2PQhmG9bryY-d_unXt_J5ql1PoFa8p0nGcDhRCoOOb6oAvKfTunKf1JwW-W_K6NA0U9q92KziuyeGXIQJl81B7F7pLi6uIaXAD0KtAalsOjHerwe0w958N8/s200/Short+Film+Project+Overview.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Purpose.</b> Produce a short film in the target language. Note: the project could be done in ANY LANGUAGE, not just English.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<b>Process.</b> The script for the film is produced step-by-step. After the students select their topic they write the main idea, then the outline and finally go through a cycle of writing drafts <br />
<a name='more'></a>of the script that have to be corrected until the final version of the script is ready.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To produce the film, the students attend a short workshop where they record and edit a test film introducing their team.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During the term the teams present the status of their work three times in class.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Every lesson teams make a planning and discuss planning and progress with the teacher.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
All documents are collected in the team portfolio.</div>
cafavierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12075493143248948150noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6358346194754057727.post-90822324259088897342011-10-28T02:00:00.004+07:002019-02-12T13:34:26.635+07:00Project Scope (Short Film Project)<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Students</b>. Students are older teenagers or adults and are at an (pre-)intermediate English level. They work in teams of 4. Class size should not exceed 25-30 students (6-7 teams) in order to have enough teacher-team talking time.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Teachers.</b> The project can be run with one teacher, but I have often had the pleasure of working together with a (Thai) teaching partner. A second teacher is especially useful <br />
<a name='more'></a>when the foreign teacher is busy discussing the progress with individual teams and when lower level students have a problem understanding instructions or comments. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Topic</b>. Teams produce a 5-10 minute short film on any topic of their choosing.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Language.</b> All classes are taught in English and all products are delivered in English. Teams may still use their first language in team discussions although they are encouraged to speak English. Note: the project could be done in ANY LANGUAGE, not just English.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b><br />
</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Homework policy.</b> There is NO homework in this course so that the teacher has the opportunity to observe the teamwork. This policy also prevents copying, and teams can not recruit other students to do the work for them. Teams that work diligently in class will rarely have to do anything outside class, except for recording the film.</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj86SBzj59y-lV228hyRsCHz2xdPUlw10CDpo9SqNhedzpQSvkHNmW4dQ7d1SBspZ66yO7m5hSlY1mUmaSVF8uQXClLiUKmxNnEcyYBPZzL7awN6IwIOnwDjbW0CamjBk6wrKdqqw8z950/s1600/Short+Film+Project+Planning.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1114" data-original-width="1394" height="159" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj86SBzj59y-lV228hyRsCHz2xdPUlw10CDpo9SqNhedzpQSvkHNmW4dQ7d1SBspZ66yO7m5hSlY1mUmaSVF8uQXClLiUKmxNnEcyYBPZzL7awN6IwIOnwDjbW0CamjBk6wrKdqqw8z950/s200/Short+Film+Project+Planning.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
This short film project is set up for 15 2-hour lessons, so a total of around 30 hours of class time. <a href="http://project-work-in-english-teaching.blogspot.com/2011/10/0.html">Preparation</a> and <a href="http://project-work-in-english-teaching.blogspot.com/2011/10/finalise-project-and-follow-up-short.html">finalising</a> take around 4 and 3 weeks respectively.
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This planning is a guideline, and some flexibility is required. Classes get cancelled, <br />
<a name='more'></a>electricity supply is sometimes interrupted, teams don't always finish their work on time, and re-scheduling tasks once in a while won't do any harm. Just make sure the teams finish their tasks properly and assign them homework only if necessary.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
An overview of the tasks, duration, sequence and dependencies is provided in the project planning above. We do NOT use project management software to keep track of the project progress, even though that is technically possible.</div>
cafavierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12075493143248948150noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6358346194754057727.post-11430285181454772772011-10-26T18:01:00.011+07:002019-02-12T13:34:26.445+07:00Prepare the Project (Short Film Project)<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Select the classroom(s).</b> The ideal project classroom has groups of tables. There is a projector and the teacher computer is fitted with MS Office and a video-editing program like Ulead VideoStudio. Each team has access to 1-2 computers with the same software during part (not all!) of the lessons.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In our most recent project we ended up using different locations <br />
<a name='more'></a>depending on the tasks at hand. We usually studied in the language lab, but for the manual phase at the beginning and when starting the manual scriptwriting, the library reference room was a good location. In the past we've also used seminar rooms for the presentations.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Arrange equipment.</b> A digital video camera is required to record class presentations.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Not all teams may have access to their own video camera, so you may want to make the/a camera available on loan. We had 2 video cameras, but teams rarely borrowed them.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Allocate personnel.</b> Besides the teacher(s) the course requires someone for computer / lab support during the lessons, and an film "expert" to lead the record / edit film workshop.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We asked our Academy's cameraman to lead the workshop. He did not speak English, so the workshop was in the students' native Thai language. However, the team introduction film they produced during the workshop was in English.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Prepare the handouts.</b> Prepare and copy a course syllabus and a set of progress reports for the students. </div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDoBv3uSl1F3VM0aMxYcTerHSOSo_50mZeK7gPLbfDKVhMSmWejia7GGN13EydfQMAkG86z3Ls__4sT36R8ulmvL0ZRhyphenhyphenXXOy3s-9jo9l2Jo4oiYqXyd_Sd1s_H02vzaczbT5kOvWkTAo/s1600/Teacher+Evaluates+Presentation.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1132" data-original-width="1600" height="141" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDoBv3uSl1F3VM0aMxYcTerHSOSo_50mZeK7gPLbfDKVhMSmWejia7GGN13EydfQMAkG86z3Ls__4sT36R8ulmvL0ZRhyphenhyphenXXOy3s-9jo9l2Jo4oiYqXyd_Sd1s_H02vzaczbT5kOvWkTAo/s200/Teacher+Evaluates+Presentation.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<b style="text-align: justify;">(Teacher) Purpose</b><span style="text-align: justify;">. Teacher evaluates the students' learning and gives the students feedback.</span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Process</b>. There are 4 forms to measure each of the 5 important milestones in this project: 2 oral presentations, the script, the film and the portfolio.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>1. Presentations. </b>In the project there are 3 oral presentations. The outline presentation by 2 members of each</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a name='more'></a>team is a tryout and receives feedback but no score. The other 2 members present the project progress, which receives feedback and a score, as does the self-reflection presentation at the end by all team members. Thus, every member presents and receives feedback twice during the project. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDoBv3uSl1F3VM0aMxYcTerHSOSo_50mZeK7gPLbfDKVhMSmWejia7GGN13EydfQMAkG86z3Ls__4sT36R8ulmvL0ZRhyphenhyphenXXOy3s-9jo9l2Jo4oiYqXyd_Sd1s_H02vzaczbT5kOvWkTAo/s1600/Teacher+Evaluates+Presentation.jpg">Form</a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>2. Scripts. </b>Only the <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBvBF5Uukg4fFTzMfpjv0UWTpDx6u7f47zE9QQmrAzTQX5rAfhXhq0B2Bpi6Puw9RmXYsU0qiZOM2B32RuvCL5awJdRYoqbqYcOdCp-ki_uTe2IeLNSwKKoCLyNe90TPdtSGGga97DpFk/s1600/English+Project+Short+Film+Script+Final.jpg">final version of the script</a> receives both a score and feedback, but the teacher gives feedback on each version of the script for the students to read and act on. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhc0Df-d2TeaD8AqDY7G1cuQRbLv0NkZKjWplGGRooevqU2j6jW331wcjihePOWkh7s2NLfwhmZkBm04N40h9geEG83-69jHZ3VDkzrGQ_Bp5etqbFQsxPUryJ1hHj8z_yhqPH16-GKV6I/s1600/Teacher+Evaluates+Script.jpg">Form</a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>3. Films. </b>The short film receives both a score and feedback, but the team introduction produced during the workshop is a tryout that receives feedback only. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUomc1KEn_SF3kW2vvLg-r9UIu2XrHR2MaJB5JvG0qY0YhY7SpoYV-1WtszJFPTXXq3lcqg3qmhY4nwuWwP47kXra1lbJ2Paf24VJ0Symbt_dia37Qb8FnBXekRaU5QW_tdswQ9_8WHdg/s1600/Teacher+Evaluates+Short+Film.jpg">Form</a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>4. Portfolio. </b>The <a href="http://project-work-in-english-teaching.blogspot.com/2011/10/portfolio.html">portfolio</a> receives a score only at the end, but feedback halfway and at the end of the project. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7XnepZqCAbIgI8Ch0kReHxep5OKYSBsLEclnTujxRKbEKOZd1CItDDOnkUOrwg_QdChFxeG4jIO9VxVP5vHY4RnsdSfg_19pT8SlnbTgDscOpKVyFz4kwOb34B1OAAc4Y2DpiR82uXKY/s1600/Teacher+Evaluates+Portfolio.jpg">Form</a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>(Students) Purpose. </b>To keep the students actively involved while others are presenting and make them apply what they've learnt in class. The popular vote also works as a motivator for students to try to impress their friends and receive a small snack as a reward. Students do NOT give scores.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Process.</b> There are 3 forms to involve the students in 4 of the 5 project presentations: 2 oral presentations and 2 films. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>1. Outline Presentation.</b> Students select the best individual presenter, the best outline graphics and motivate their choices. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUwh6uKVsQez0U8BZh6rOGT7iiVmNuO-CeqaFeOZU4sDarO7Pw-KJABoDBTOHBhAm3Cp7-ntzqfYD9w7ekyEmjx4N-lrcE2_32BFtQly8xGHjAV9fvub737Vbw-uEoU0j4iq60RqBfsYA/s1600/Student+Evaluates+Outline+Presentations.jpg">Form</a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>2. Project Progress Presentation.</b> Students write a positive and negative comment on each individual project progress presentation, select the best presenter and motivate their choice. Students do not evaluate the self-reflection presentation at the end of the project; they select the best short film instead. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhlYvkGsACgsW-8CWCmPY0WWLyO8JHo8I9B1x6Qo9Qtj-P5wz_QF3Zu9hXUfyqrPR0nLDSZ4bxOuQcv-cRqmmPRheFiZDyNmXx7qkfCoTOC4NO4rhWqxeUc4nXshOnjwbjCe1pctjmMlyY/s1600/Student+Evaluates+Presentations.jpg">Form</a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>3. Films.</b> At the end of the project they select the best short film and motivate their choice. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDeNe3rXrkDSW-iPcOFUrNKPSGfEjTJ0a6L8WwOdmQilMXKabYjDq61cPxfahVbhPJu7rx9hpnH58_HSgR1ITaO9ppSfk8CrCF4tdIWiKinPnEPTElVijDzP8eilUOCezIuaSWWQFKiOI/s1600/Student+Evaluates+Short+Films.jpg">Form</a></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Purpose</b>. Students write the main idea of the film they want to make. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Process</b>. After brainstorming the team select their preferred topic and write their main idea down in a few lines. They discuss the topic with the foreign teacher in English.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Note: if possible, teams should select different topics, so that all results can be published and there won't be any need to choose only the best film on a particular topic.<br />
The main idea is collected in their <a href="http://project-work-in-english-teaching.blogspot.com/2011/10/portfolio.html">portfolio</a>.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Purpose.</b> Team members take responsibility for their part of the project by reporting on work done and work planned.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Process</b>. After class discussion has clarified the work to be done the teacher hands out a blank PR to each team.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The teams discuss how to divide the work. On the PR each team member writes down what (s)he has done for the project since the previous lesson, and </div>
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;">
what (s)he is going to do before the next lesson. Members write for themselves so that they can be held responsible for finishing their part of the work on time. Time: 10-15 minutes. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Writing reflections or comments is not mandatory but expected in case of specific problems and after e.g. class presentations.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If a student is absent, one of the other team members writes down why (s)he is absent, and the team assigns her/him part of the work for the coming period. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The (foreign) teacher sits down with each team in the role of project leader. Each member reports on her/his work verbally in English, and answers questions. The teacher uses the previous lesson's PR to check whether the tasks that were planned were completed. If the work is not ready, or problems occurred, the member has to explain the reason and the work is re-scheduled. The teacher also makes sure the work is divided equally. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After the discussion the teacher signs off the report and writes comments if necessary. Time: 5-10 minutes per team.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<b>Purpose.</b> Teams organise their ideas and write an outline for their short film.<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Process.</b> Teams divide their short film into scenes and describe location, actions and topics of the dialogue or narration of each scene in sequence. The actual dialogue or narration is written later in the script, not here. The graphics can be drawings, photos or any other way the teams want to<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Purpose. </b>Teams write the script of their short film.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Process. </b>Teams sit together without the distraction of computers and write the first draft of each scene by hand. later drafts are written with a text editor like MS Word. Not all scenes have to be written at the same time, but </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a name='more'></a>teams hand in their completed scenes at the end of each lesson. Teams follow the sample script provided. The teacher comments and indicates the mistakes, after which the teams rewrite the scenes, correct the mistakes and act upon instructions. The teacher checks again.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The parts of the script that are approved are signed off by the teacher. The students can start recording those parts after verifying the pronunciation with the teacher. Teams write as many drafts as necessary; 3-4 drafts of scenes is not unusual.<br />
<br />
Teams identify their script with class, date, team name and version number in the top right-corner of the page. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The scripts are collected in their <a href="http://project-work-in-english-teaching.blogspot.com/2011/10/portfolio.html">portfolio</a>. </div>
